Don't
miss Audie Murphy Days, April 20-21!
The Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum is dedicated to
the preservation of the history of the American cotton industry, as well
as the history of Hunt County, Texas and the northern Texas Blackland
Prairie. Located in historic Greenville, Texas on ten acres of Texas Blacklands,
the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum physical plant includes the Ende-Gaillard
House, the oldest house in Greenville, a cotton patch, and picnic areas.
Founded
in 1987 as the Hunt County Museum, Greenville’s nationally known Audie
Murphy/American Cotton Museum has grown from an idea of the local chapter
of the American Association of University Women and a downtown storefront
location to a major tourist attraction and research center. Host
of the annual Cotton History Conference, numerous other conferences, symposiums,
and festivals, the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum is on the forefront
of local history and historical cotton research in Texas. The Audie
Murphy/American Cotton Museum is very involved in community activities
and historic preservation throughout Hunt County.
Our
local history gallery is widely known as home to the Audie L. Murphy
Hunt
County Veteran’s Exhibit, a large collection of military memorabilia
relating to Audie Murphy and other Hunt County veterans, as well as many
temporary
local history exhibits.
Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m.
until 5:00 p.m., the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum welcomes individual
tours, scholastic tours, and group tours. Tours for individuals are self-guided,
but groups ten or larger may call ahead at least six weeks for a guided
tour with a docent. No guided tours are provided without reservations.
The Ende-Gaillard House is open by appointment and weather permitting.
